Physicians Assistant Hospitalist

SUMMARY: The Physician’s Assistant will be responsible for patients admitted to the non-teaching service of the Department of Medicine. This will include the 2 North cardiac step-down unit. These patients are the responsibility of the primary care attending physician. The Physician’s Assistant will assist the primary care attending physician in all aspects of general hospital care for these patients.

In particular, the Physician’s Assistant will be expected to:

· Complete an initial evaluation of the patient’s admitting problem.

· Write a brief holding note.

· Write admission orders.

· Co-ordinate initial care with the Nursing Staff.

· Inform the private physician that the patient is in-house.

· Discuss the initial holding orders with the private physician.

· Perform follow up phone calls to patients discharged from the hospitalist team within 24-36 hours of discharge.

The Physician’s Assistant will be available to respond to urgent day-to-day problems with the management of the general medical patients, responding to specific questions and concerns of the attending or nursing staff. The Physician’s Assistant will be supervised by the Department of Medicine and will directly report to the Non-Teaching Medical Service Director of the Department of Medicine. The Hospitalist physicians will provide alternative attending coverage for the Physician’s Assistant. Work requires occasional communication outside of the work group. Communication with external contacts is for providing or receiving factual information. Courtesy and tact are required in dealing with customers.

General duties:

Consistently and independently follows established safety and infection control procedures. Intervenes in unsafe situations.

Meets or exceeds expectations of individuals for whom service is provided.

Participates on interdepartmental, hospital and departmental committees as appropriate.

Required Education: Bachelor of Science

Required Certification, License, or Registration: Certified Physician’s Assistant (NCCPA certification); MD state license

Required Experience: Hospital Based Training in Acute Care.

Preferred Experience : 2 years in clinical practice or as a Physician’s Assistant in emergency department , intensive care unit, internal medicine, or hospitalist service.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
